Market Vibe Check: The Sneeze Guard is Loose

Written by: George from The Smartin Team

I’m staring at the pre-market tape and it’s doing absolutely nothing. Europe is quiet. Australia is quiet. It’s like the entire global economy is a library where everyone just saw a giant spider crawl under the rug. Nobody wants to move. I don’t like it. When things are this still, that’s when the piano falls out of the window.

Last week was a parade. Everyone’s a genius now. The SPY was up 2.06%, and the QQQ jumped 3.28%. My dry cleaner tried to give me a tip on AI chips while he was looking for my starch-heavy button-downs. That’s my signal. When the guy who can’t find my trousers is talking about “the future of compute,” I want to liquidate everything and buy gold bars to sew into my mattress.

The “Wizard Ring” Problem

Look at PLTR. It went up 36.9% last week. Thirty-six point nine! Peter Lynch always says “know what you own,” but do you? Really? Palantir sounds like a wizard’s tool for finding a lost ring in a swamp. If I can’t explain a company’s business model to a guy waiting for a bus without using the word “synergy” or “algorithms,” I’m out. A 36% jump in a week isn’t a fundamental move; it’s a collective hallucination. It’s the stock market equivalent of everyone deciding at the same time that clogs are cool again. They aren’t!

Meanwhile, PTON dropped 11.9%. The $2,000 clothes rack. Now that I understand. I understand buying a bike, realizing that pedaling to nowhere is exhausting, and using it to hang my damp towels. That’s a business model grounded in the reality of human laziness. I can get behind that, but the market hates it.

The Fear is Coming From Inside the House

The VIX is currently sitting at 15.46, up 3.76%. Do you see that? The indices were green last week, but the “fear gauge” is stretching its legs. It’s like a horror movie where the teenagers are all laughing by the lake, but the camera just panned to a guy in a hockey mask sharpening a machete. People are nervous. I’ve been nervous since 1994. It’s my natural state of being.

I’m attempting this new thing where I do the exact opposite of what my instincts tell me. My gut is screaming, “George, sell your socks! The sky is falling!” So, naturally, I’m going to sit here and do nothing. I’m going to be a pillar of stability. A neurotic, sweating, terrified pillar.

If you’re looking for a fun stock market app to tell you whether that 36.9% jump is a “tenbagger” in the making or just a giant bubble waiting for a pin, you need to check the math. Lynch wouldn’t buy a wizard ring without looking at the debt-to-equity ratio first, and neither should you.

I’m going to go get a bagel. But I’m not getting the cream cheese I want. I’m getting the low-fat chive because my gut says “plain,” and my gut is a liar.
