The Digital Deadbolt with a Very High Cover Charge

Written by: Jerry from The Smartin Team

The Invisible Wall in the Cloud

Have you looked at the price of cybersecurity lately? It is a fascinating business. You spend millions of dollars on software from a company like Palo Alto Networks just so your Tuesday afternoon stays exactly as boring as it was supposed to be. If they do their job perfectly, you forget they even exist. It’s the only industry where the “best-case scenario” is total anonymity.

But then you look at the PANW stock ticker, and suddenly, they aren’t so invisible.

The Great Platformization

Lately, the big talk at the office is “platformization.” It’s a beautiful word, isn’t it? It sounds like they’re building a space station, but really, it just means they want you to stop buying your locks from five different guys and start buying the door, the hinges, and the doorbell from them.

PANW is tired of being just a firewall. They want to be the ceiling, the floor, and the air you breathe. They’re giving away the initial samples for free just to get you hooked on the ecosystem. It’s like a bakery giving you a free bagel, but then charging you twenty bucks a month for the cream cheese subscription. And if you stop paying? No more bagels.

The Cost of “Zero Trust”

Then there is this concept of “Zero Trust.” That’s their marketing slogan! Think about that. We’ve reached a point in society where “we don’t trust anyone” isn’t a personality flaw; it’s a multi-billion dollar corporate strategy.

PANW sells the idea that your own employees are suspicious, your coffee machine is a spy, and your printer is actively plotting your downfall. And the investors love it! The crazier the world gets, the more people want to buy a bigger digital fence. But at a certain point, you have to wonder: how much are we willing to pay for a fence that we can’t even see?

The Valuation Headache

The stock is always priced like it’s the last bottle of water in the desert. You look at the P/E ratio and you need a telescope to find the top of it. They tell you, “Don’t worry about the earnings today, look at the billings of tomorrow!”

It’s a game of musical chairs where the music is played by AI and the chairs are made of encrypted data. PANW is a leader, no doubt about it. They have the best tech, the biggest names, and a CEO who talks like he’s ready to defend the planet from a Martian invasion. But as an investor, you have to ask yourself: are you buying a great company, or are you just paying a massive premium for a little bit of sleep?

In the end, we’re all just clicking “Update Now” and hoping for the best.
