The Ecosystem That Ate My Common Sense

The Great White Square Infestation
I walked into the coffee shop this morning, and what do I see? A little white square. I go to the barber? A little white square. I tried to buy a vintage lampshade from a guy in a park? He pulls a square out of his pocket! It’s an infestation! SQ has turned every human interaction into a transaction that requires a software update. They’ve got their hooks into the baker, the butcher, and the candlestick maker, but I’m starting to wonder if the baker actually knows how much he’s paying for the privilege of being “disrupted.”
The merchant business was the bread and butter. It was simple. You swipe, they take a cut, everyone moves on with their lives. But no, that wasn’t enough for the high-rises. They had to go and build a “closed-loop ecosystem.” That’s a fancy corporate term for “we want to be the bank, the wallet, and the guy who sells you the wallet.”
The Bitcoin Fever Dream
Then there’s the whole pivot to the digital gold rush. Look, I’m all for progress, but when a payment processor starts acting like a religious cult dedicated to the blockchain, I get nervous. They’re pouring billions into things most people can’t explain to their mothers. If I want to buy a bagel, I don’t want to wait for a global consensus on a ledger; I want my bagel!
SQ is trying to bridge the gap between the guy selling apples on the street and the billionaire trading digital tokens in a bunker. It’s a wide bridge, and I’m afraid they’re going to trip on the railing. They call it “synergy.” I call it a distraction from the fact that the competition is catching up and they’re charging fees that would make a loan shark blush.
Can You Trust the Maze?
The Cash App is a phenomenon, I’ll give them that. It’s the only app that makes sending twenty bucks feel like you’re playing a video game. But they’ve got a massive target on their back now. Regulators are sniffing around like hounds at a steakhouse, and the “disruptors” are finding out that the old-school banks have very sharp teeth.
Is SQ a growth machine or just a very loud noise in a very crowded room? They’ve got the data, they’ve got the merchants, and they’ve got the cool factor—for now. But the moment the “ecosystem” starts feeling like a cage, people are going to find the exit. I’m keeping my eye on the square, but I’m keeping my wallet in my front pocket where I can feel it.
